Professional whitening: in the surgery or at home

We offer two whitening options and choose between them with you, according to your needs and routine. In-surgery whitening with a light-activated system lightens your teeth in a single appointment, safely and under control, with a result you see immediately. Alternatively we set you up for home whitening: we make trays moulded to your teeth and supply a professional-grade gel, so you whiten in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace and under our supervision. A hygiene appointment is recommended before any whitening, because the gel works on clean teeth and the result is more even.

Whitening: what to expect

Professional whitening acts on discolouration of the enamel and dentine, lightening the natural shade of your teeth by several tones. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, which therefore need to be factored into the plan. Some temporary sensitivity to cold in the days that follow is normal and settles on its own. The result typically lasts one to two years and depends on your habits — coffee, tea, red wine and smoking shorten it — and a top-up with your trays easily refreshes it.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of ceramic, a few tenths of a millimetre thick, bonded to the front surface of the front teeth to correct colour, shape, minor rotations, gaps or chips. They require minimal preparation of the tooth and, once bonded, resist staining and last for many years. Every case is planned with a preview of the result, so you can see and approve your new smile before we begin. Cosmetic treatment is led by Dr Miriam Cocchi, who holds a European Master's in Aesthetic Dentistry, at our Lugano practicemeet the team — and by Med. dent. Yves Jacot-Descombes at our Bellinzona practice.

Other cosmetic options

Veneers are not always necessary. The result you want can often be achieved with something simpler: replacing old, darkened fillings with tooth-coloured composite, rebuilding a chipped edge, reshaping a slightly uneven tooth or realigning with clear aligners. Our approach is always to propose the most conservative option that achieves the goal.

Smile consultation

Every treatment begins with a smile analysis: we look at proportions, colour, gum line and expectations, and propose the most conservative plan possible, with a transparent estimate before we start. The aim is not a "catalogue" smile but a result that belongs to your face — one nobody would ever pick out as artificial.

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening damage your teeth?

Not when it is carried out with professional products under a dentist’s supervision. The enamel is not affected; some passing sensitivity may occur and disappears within a few days. Unsupervised do-it-yourself products, on the other hand, are not recommended.

How long do veneers last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, porcelain veneers last on average 10 to 15 years or more. They should be protected from habits such as biting hard objects or grinding your teeth; for grinders, a night guard is advisable.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have crowns or fillings?

Yes, but crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour. If they are in a visible area, we will discuss whether to replace them after whitening so that the whole smile matches.
