How often should I see the dentist?
Dental check-ups are part of basic healthcare: good oral health supports your general health. Dentists recommend a check-up once a year. Regular visits to the dentist and the hygienist give you tailored advice for keeping your teeth and gums healthy, prevent excessive plaque build-up and allow any new problems to be caught early. If you have pain, a swollen cheek, bleeding gums or pus, it is important to see a dentist straight away. Even if you are not yet our patient, we will see you — including in an emergency.
Why are regular check-ups important?
Regular check-ups with a dentist allow problems in the mouth to be caught early. Gum disease (periodontitis) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults: almost 75% of adults experience gum problems at some point in their lives — inflamed gums, tissue destruction, tooth loss. Tooth decay is also among the most widespread diseases of all. A check-up once a year stops these conditions from damaging the teeth deeply.
What happens at a full dental examination?
At a check-up the dentist asks you a few questions about your dental and general medical history, then carries out a full visual examination, noting everything they see: missing teeth, composite fillings, crowns, decay, gum recession and so on. The examination is completed with X-rays, which can reveal root infections, decay, tartar deposits and more. With all the information gathered, the dentist makes a diagnosis. If treatment is needed, the plan is discussed with you and you receive a written estimate before any treatment begins.
How much does dental treatment cost?
We apply the DENTOTAR® tariff, the standardised and transparent fee schedule promoted by the SSO, which assigns a number of points to each procedure. The cost is calculated by multiplying the points by CHF 1.20. Read more about fees and transparency.
